教育目標

James Joyce, it has been argued, is the greatest, or most important, or most unique, or whatever you like, modern writer of English (language) fiction. But Joyce wasn’t English. He was born and grew up in Dublin, Ireland during an era often called the Irish Renaissance (late 19th-early 20th centuries), an era which produced such world-class talents as W. B. Yeats, George Bernard Shaw (both Dubliners), Frank O’Connor, Augusta Gregory, and many more. Modern Irish Rock music from Van Morrison to the Cranberries to U2 owes a lot to these writers. This is a selection of Joyce’s work, taught more or less chronologically. We will read the complete A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man. There will be a selection of six stories from Dubliners (not “Araby”), a brief selection of Joyce’s rarely taught, but simple and moving Pomes Penneyeach. Finally, we will cover with careful guidance, sections from Ulysses: from Proteus, the Lestrygonians, and the night-town scene, called Circe. We’ll look at page 1 and two or three other pages, including the last one from Finnegan’s Wake, just for flavor. Ulysses is not a particularly hard book for Tunghai FLLD students. The instructor knows very well the problems students might have, and believes this famous novel can be understood. The inst. (let’s go to “I”) grew up in a background that puts me in a position to transmit the pathos, humour, Irishness, and the essence of James Joyce to you.
