1. A strong comprehension of the works read in class, including subject, themes, characters, settings and construction. 2. An understanding of how narrative works to engage the reader and create meaning. 3. The ability to understand and correctly employ the vocabularly used to analyze literary construction. 4. An awareness of the variety, breadth and depth of 20th century American literature.

課程概述

In this class we will focus on four important figures in 20th century American literature: Hemingway, Fitzgerald, Steinbeck, and Toni Morrison. In addition, we will sample short work by a variety of other important writers, including Eudora Welty, Flannery O’Connor, John Cheever, James Alan McPherson, Saul Bellow, and Gish Jen.
