Despite the ubiquity of these complex formations within the city, attempts to deconstruct the city through the lens of object oriented views have been scarce until only recently. The city’s continuing growth/decay combined with academic interest in the “complex,” however, has led to increasing numbers of designers, theorists, and students engaging this unique urban dynamic. Objectives vary: some hope to “fix the problem,” while others wish to uncover and preserve its alternative intelligence. Despite the relative merits of either position, both suffer from fundamental problems of prescription that arise from incomplete conceptual models, deeply biased and exclusive polemics, and inadequate efforts toward defining the image of Taipei itself. The work of this study, then, involves developing new modes to imagine Taipei through careful exercises in drawing, coding, modeling data and understanding what object oriented promises.
