教育目標

This semester will deal with works and analytical techniques relevant to performing early music. The baroque literature covered is categorized by area: French, Italian and German. The additional material is by period. Review of literature involves performance of various works as well as how to make intelligent interpretive decisions. Therefore, analysis, historical performance practices, treatises, and editions all have a bearing on the study of any given work. Seminars will involve lecturing on various works, development of interpretive decisions and the performance of the works. All sessions will include listening and identifying salient characteristics of each work. The students will also be asked to prepare performances of various styles with justification for interpretive decisions. In addition there will be short reading assignments and analytical projects dealing with topics discusses in class. Grade will be based mostly on performance projects but a component of the grade will also be taken for class participation and weekly assignments. Composers will be taken from the following: La Barre, Hotteterre, Couperin, Vivaldi, J.S. Bach, Handel, Telemann, C.P.E. Bach, Quantz, Stamitz, Mozart, Beethoven and other selected Romantic composers for various instruments.
