教育目標

This course introduces both Greek and Roman mythology which form the basis of Western Literature and which continue to influence modern literature. Both myths and adaptations of myths in modern form will be read and studied. Various aspects of the myths will be discussed. Students will learn to approach myths critically and at the same time strengthen their skills in reading, analyzing and discussing narratives. This elective course (2 credits) provides a basis for literature classes taken in later years. General English skills should improve as well.

課程概述

Western Writings on Taiwan is a seminar for third- and fourth-year students. This seminar examines texts, all in English or English translation, authored by Europeans and Americans writing on some aspect of Taiwan and its people. The texts range from the eighteenth through the twentieth centuries, but the emphasis is on the critical decades of the history of Taiwan from 1860 to 1900. Included will be works of fiction, travel accounts, scientific treatises, missionary tracts and memoirs, and diplomatic reports.
