教育目標

1. Students will learn about the socio-historical backgrounds of different wars, including World War I, World War II, the Vietnam War, the Gulf Wars, and other types of conflict. Students will obtain a deeper understanding of how issues relevant to war are presented in a variety of literary works aimed at both adults and children but always through the eyes of a child or children. They will demonstrate this knowledge and ability in a research paper, journal essays, presentations, classroom discussions and other in-class work. 2. Students will read a variety of works on the theme of war through the viewpoint of a child. They will identify the salient features of this kind of literature and also see how these features develop and change over time. They will demonstrate this knowledge and ability in a research paper, journal essays, presentations, classroom discussions and other in-class work. 3. Students will read a number of secondary texts related to the authors and books under discussion. They will also look at general literary theory and criticism related to literature and to children’s literature. They will demonstrate this knowledge and ability in a research paper, journal essays, presentations, classroom discussions and other in-class work. 4. Students will apply literary theory and criticism to one or more works by one or more authors of their choice. They will independently research these works and develop a well-argued research paper in relation to the topics and themes discussed in class. They will present their findings to the class at the end of the semester.

課程概述

Although adults often argue that children should be protected from the horrors of war and consider war a taboo topic, war is a hot topic in children’s literature and war stories from the perspective of a child can also be found in adult literature. This course will discuss novels, short stories, poetry, radio, TV and film, comics, and picture books related to war from a child’s perspective. Different aspects of war such as rationing, bombing, evacuating children, child soldiers, refugees, war crimes, and so on will be discussed through the course. The choice of a child as narrative perspective has far-reaching consequences on the presentation of war as a theme. The various texts also allow for a discussion of the child’s perspective versus the adult’s perspective in presenting the theme of war. The effects of war on childhood in general and on those children who survive war and are forced to become its witnesses in particular are major themes to be considered. The course will further discuss and question the value systems in the texts, especially related to concepts such as ‘enemy,’ ‘patriotism,’ and ‘honor’ among others. Discussing a broad range of texts also allows readers to see the development of sophistication in the treatment of the theme. Changing viewpoints on war over time will be considered through looking at works published over the course of the 20th century and into the 21st century. A selection of works to be considered are The Diary of a Young Girl Anne Frank (1947), The Silver Sword Ian Serraillier (1956), When Hitler Stole Pink Rabbit Judith Kerr (1971), Carrie’s War by Nina Bawden (1973), The Machine Gunners Robert Westall (1975), Goodnight Mister Tom Michelle Magorian (1981), War Horse Michael Morpurgo (1982), Rose Blanche Roberto Innocento (1986), The Kingdom by the Sea Robert Westall (1990), Gulf Robert Westall (1992), In My Pocket Dorrith M. Sim (1996), One More Border. The True Story of One Family’s Escape from War-Torn Europe William Kaplan (
