教育目標

Students will gain an understanding of basic translation theory and techniques. In this course, students will use real life translation project material to simulate professional translation processes. The students will also have the opportunity to read and discuss the various methods in translation. The objectives are: •Understand the basic theories of translation, outline of various translation studies •Understand the life cycle of a translation project and the role of a translator. •Be exposed to various types of subject matter where Chinese into English translation is most frequently requested, including financial, legal, and commercial documents. •Learn to use key translation resources, including dictionaries, glossaries, online information, and client-provided reference materials. •Have an entry level understanding about new translation technologies, including computer-assisted translation tools, terminology management tools, Machine Translation, etc. •Practice translating a wide variety of documents from the source language into English. •Practice estimating job scope, turnaround times, and communication with customers in an effective and professional way. •Work ethics: the Dos and Don’ts of translation beyond linguistic accuracy.
