教育目標

On completion of the course, students should be able to 1) improve language skills through reading English advertisements dealing with diverse and global issues, 2) be familiar with the Internet technology to compile an electronic portfolio in English, 3) foster problem-solving and critical thinking skills by interacting in groups, and 4) become autonomous and self-directed English language learners.

課程概述

This is a one semester course designed to make learning English a practical and interesting experience by drawing teaching materials from advertisements. Students will compile Internet-based electronic portfolios which aim to engage students in self-directed learning, reflection, self-assessment and peer-assessment. The electronic portfolio used in this class is a ready-made webpage, taking about 15 minutes to create. The instructor will provide a sample portfolio on which the students may model their work. Students will then collect theme-based advertisements from various sources, such as Internet, newspapers, magazines, flyers, and brochures. All collected materials will be uploaded to individual portfolios two days before each class session. Students will be responsible for highlighting key words or phrases in their collected materials. Students will read group members’ on-line portfolio collections before class meeting time, and discuss selected advertisements in groups during class sessions. After class, students will write their inquiry about the advertisements and their feedback on other group member’s introduction of materials on the internet. Students will be expected to reflect on their portfolio collections. By participating in this portfolio project, students will be able to enhance their interaction with classmates and develop English communication skills inside and outside the classroom.
