|Portfolio assessment report (grade given by Dr. Yu)||30||Students will conduct portfolio assessment of language skills with high school students and report on this work.|
|Fixed-response test project||25||Students will produce a fixed-response test, then analyze and interpret results.|
|Performance assessment project||20||Students will design a performance assessment and then discuss test-related issues.|
|Assessment for learning project||25||Students will analyze classroom assessment and discuss issues related to assessment for learning.|
By the end of the course, students should have gained the following core skills:
--understand and apply recommended principles of language assessment;
--understand the wide variety of language assessment methods, especially their strengths and weaknesses, and choose appropriate assessments of language (e.g., 4 skills) for given purposes;
--design, analyze, and interpret their own language assessments
--interpret and critique language assessments produced by other entities (e.g., publishers, language testing organizations)
--have an introductory understanding of recent developments in language assessment, such as critical language testing, assessment of social aspects of language, and computer-based testing.
This course introduces students to key aspects of foreign language
assessment, particularly those relevant for language teachers. Topics
include principles of language assessment (especially validity),
assessment design and analysis, and techniques for using assessments to
improve language learning. Students will learn a variety of ways to
assess students in a variety of language areas. The course consists
primarily of lectures, group discussion, test construction and use
assignments, and implementation of portfolio assessment.
