Linguistics is a second-year required course. This course provides an introductory overview of linguistics. Its focus is language as a reflection of the structure of the human mind and human society. The following topics are covered: the various levels of grammatical structure as they are treated in linguistic theory (phonetics, phonology, morphology, syntax, and semantics); questions of language as a social phenomenon (dialects, language change, language and society, language and gender, etc.); and issues in language acquisition.

The course aims to introduce and to acquaint students with current concerns in the study of linguistics. Students will be encouraged to participate in discussion sessions concerning various topics of linguistics such as pragmatics, syntax, semantics, etc. By the end of the course students should be familiar with a range of topics in contemporary linguistics. The course should be seen as a preparatory step for students to explore their interests in the field of linguistic studies.
