Journalism Translation 1 is a seminar for third- and fourth year students. The purpose of this course is to train students in the translation of journalistic materials from English to Chinese. The skills acquired may equip them for future employment, but they will also benefit their overall language abilities regardless of their career opportunities. The broad topical exercises students will engage in will allow them to become familiar with the terminology and style of journalistic writing. Students will begin working on the sentence and paragraph levels of translation and toward summarizing the whole article as is practice in this country. They will also learn to deal with the knotty problems of semantics, syntax, and style in translation. The course materials will be drawn from major English-language news sources, and will especially focus on current events, finance, scientific and technologic topics, and the topics of the students’ own choices.
1. To keep up with current world events 2. To learn general journalistic vocabulary and style appropriate for translation 3. To learn about independent working habits of a translator
