This seminar for juniors and seniors will focus upon the development of skills for oral consecutive interpretation. The course will emphasize tasks that increase students‘ ability to understand and analyze oral communication in English (source language) and then convey it in Chinese (target language) clearly and concisely. The instruction will include extensive training in extended listening comprehension, recall, paraphrase, summarization, note-taking and sight translation. More specifically, this course will teach students how to concentrate, listen analytically, and recall information from basic, 2 to 3 minute speech recordings. Students will be expected to keep weekly learning journals and practice their learned skills for a minimum of two hours each week.
Course Objectives: This course aims to help the students 1) become familiar typical consecutive interpretation; 2) expand the ability to identify, analyze, and recall meaning in oral SL to establish logical relations between its components for later paraphrasing in TL (Chinese); 3) lay a foundation for the development of professional skills in consecutive interpretation,
