教育目標

This course is designed for those who are not English majors. We emphasize four skills learning-- reading, writing, listening and speaking. Thus, the textbook we use is four skills oriented American English File 3. Grammar, writing and reading practice will be much emphasized in class at the first semester, while play writing and performance will be the focus next semester. We will practice how to write correctly from sentences to a whole article. Since the increase of vocabulary and the practice of grammar can promote our English proficiency, we will have three short readings to help us build up those skills within contexts. The short readings we choose are Huckleberry Finn, Frankenstein, and Great expectations. We will have quizzes for comprehension, writing and oral practice to each story. By reading those books, we will obtain knowledge and develop critical thoughts; further, we hope, through discussion, we learn how to share and express our ideas precisely, clearly, and directly. As for listening class, we will use Listening Advantage 3 in language lab.

課程概述

Freshman English is a first-year required course. The goal of the course is primarily to improve the proficiency of students in communicative language skills with an emphasis on speaking and writing. A functional, notional approach is taken to planning objectives to help students gain confidence in using English in social interactions. Therefore, active participation in the class is a prerequisite for successful completion. A variety of activities are used throughout the year including dialogues, role-plays, pair work, small group projects and whole class discussions. The syllabus includes a general review of grammar and many class activities attempt to integrate these grammar components. Therefore, students are given the opportunity to apply the rules to real-life situations that they might encounter in an English-speaking country. Teachers encourage students to monitor their grammar usage while improving their level of fluency.
