教育目標

This course is designed to give the student knowledge about the major trends in the 16th and 17th Centuries vis-à-vis the major writers of the times – Christopher Marlowe, William Shakespeare, John Donne, John Dryden, and Alexander Pope. Besides reading the plays and poems of the period, we will also note the changes in culture, politics, laws and justice, science (Newtonism),and the shift in Literary History from verse to prose in the development of the Novel.

課程概述

British Literature I is the first part of a two�year sequence of courses consisting of British Literature I and British Literature II. British Literature I introduces students to British literature from its Anglo�Saxon origins up to and including the Enlightenment. �British Literature from approximately the age of the Industrial Revolution, i.e. the last decades of the 18th Cent., up to the modern period is studied in British Literature II.�
