Students will be expected to give short in-class presentations and write several short reports and two term papers.	100	The first is 5-7 pages. The second one will be 8-10 pages. These assignments will be given rather than a midterm and final examination in class.

教育目標

This course will examine the challenges, opportunities, and difficulties of becoming an author in a foreign land. The course will stress that it is not about being a student or even an assigned reporter from a magazine or journal abroad. Those are very common and easy to do if one has sponsoring universities or organizations. Rather, an intellectual or writer working at a foreign land in your literary profession entails many years of deep commitment and study, a devotion not only to the language but to the understanding of the politics, history and culture of this other land. Without that, it is impossible to publish regularly because you will simply not have the depth of understanding necessary in order to write about this other place. If you are attached to some news organization as a reporter on assignment, you will have the material resources (financial and other), but you will not have the freedom to determine your own topics at your own pace. Only the freelance writer or intellectual has possessed this kind of freedom. But the difficulties and risks of having no support except your own convictions and vision, it is not easy to sustain over many years.
