These two brilliant sons of Dublin are without question among the most influential writers in modern English. It is a very strong point in our program that we can all read and discuss these authors in the original language. I have the following plan: Shaw: Mrs. Warren’s Profession (play); The Devil’s Disciple (play) Cashel Byron’s Profession (novel). Mrs. Warren is a modern classic, but The Devil’s Disciple is rarely taught at the university level, and the brilliant Cashel Byron is only a name, if that, to most modern students of British literature. We’ll change that here. Joyce: from Dubliners, “Ivy Day in the Committee Room,” “The Dead,” “An Encounter;” from Ulysses, “Proteus,” “Lestrygonians,” “Night-town,” “Penelope” (Molly Bloom). Again, “Ivy Day” is usually omitted in American universities as “too local” and “Penelope” as “too pornographic.”
