教育目標

By the end of the course, students should have achieved the following objectives: 1. A strong comprehension of the works read in class, including themes, characters, settings and plot. 2. An understanding of the techniques, such as sensory detail, dialogue, scene, characterization, point of view, and plot that writers use to create a story 3. The ability to use narrative techniques in creative exercises and “find” a draft of their own short story. 4. The ability to critique, identifying the strengths and weaknesses of a draft of a story.

課程概述

In this discussion class, students will discover the stories that they want to write. We will read short stories by a wide variety of American writers, looking at the way these writers use literary techniques such as sensory detail, dialogue, plot, scene, and point of view. Students will write short exercises in which they practice these techniques, reading these pieces aloud in class. Then students will expand their exercises into a complete story, which the class will read and discuss with an eye to improving the story. The course will involve close reading of published stories, group discussion, short creative exercises both outside of class and in class, and one longer short story, 10 pages, which the entire class reads and discusses.
