教育目標

本課程介紹西方古典音樂 (Western art music)的源頭：中古、文藝復興音樂。討論的課題包括當時音樂與基督教的關聯，主要的樂類（genre），記譜法，及當時的社會、政治、文化背景。 本課程教科書為Burkholder/Grout/Palisca, A History of Western Music （第八版），包括本書附上的CDs、樂譜集 (anthology of scores)。幾個重要的電子資料庫（如Grove Music Online、Naxos）將輔助教科書中的內容。課程中並將介紹基本的音樂論文寫作原則，如正確的引用法 （citation），智慧財產權 （intellectual property）的觀念，與抄襲剽竊 （plagiarism）的定義。

課程概述

The purpose of this course is to give students an overview of music during the Middle Ages and Renaissance periods. In addition to the Mid-Term and Final Exams, four large quizzes will be given (in principle, after each two chapters). Short quizzes may also be given at the beginning or end of a class period. The text for this course is the Burkholder, Grout, Palisca, A History of Western Music, 7th edition. The music example book and CDs which accompany this book are also important materials for class and reference. The class is divided into two large units: Middle Ages and Renaissance. Quizzes will count 60% and the exam at the end of the unit will count 40%. The grade averages for each unit will be combined and averaged for the final score.
