教育目標

On completion of the course, students should be able to 1. communicate effectively in English in small groups and as individuals; 2. read and understand young adult, authentic (non-simplified) novels in English; 3. demonstrate the ability to write, produce, and perform short creative plays, which continue the story presented in the books; and 4. think independently, logically, analytically, and creatively in English.

課程概述

Students will read and discuss two popular modern American novels: Because of Winn-Dixie, which tells the story of how a stray dog helps a young girl and her father find the courage to face their losses and deal with their new life in a small town, and Gathering Blue, a futuristic story in which a young orphan girl with special talent learns the mysteries and secrets of the community run by the all-powerful Council of Guardians. Discussions will deal with social issues that are related to student life, as well as general life, in our modern world. Discussions will take place in a relaxed and comfortable environment which is student-friendly. During class discussions, there will be no wrong answers, just varied opinions. The exams are the acting component of the course. For the exams, students will form small groups and will create alternate endings to each of the two books. Students will perform their short plays in which they portray the characters in the books and continue the story lines beyond the actual endings of the books. For the midterm exam, the plays based on the first book, Because of Winn-Dixie, will be performed “live” in front of the class in a theater setting.
