This 1-year course, meeting two hours a week, is designed to enrich second-year sociology department students’ knowledge of academic English and enhance their vocabulary size in academic field and reading strategies in order to cultivate their critical thinking skills. In this course, reading materials will mainly be introduced in a content-based approach, where students will be exposed to topics in different academic fields with a focus on the vocabulary acquisition, recognizing reading structures, organizing information and strategies for critical thinking At the same time, inductive reading activities will also be incorporated to provide the students with opportunities to apply their critical thinking skills in reading topic and English learning.
