教育目標

By the end of the course, students should have achieved the following objectives: 1. Be familiar with the distinctive features of the short story cycle. 2. Be able to tell the differences between a short story cycle and a novel. 3. Be able to differentiate a short story collection from a short story cycle. 4. Know how to use their critical thinking skills in literary analysis. 5. Develop an appreciation for literature in its cultural context.

課程概述

The short story cycle is seen as a hybrid genre of the short story and the novel. This is because while individual stories in a short story cycle, like stories in a collection, can be read separately and understood in isolation; they are also interrelated and work together to tell a larger story as chapters in a novel do. In this course, we will read some representative texts of the American short story cycles to experience and enjoy the complexity and beauty of the genre.
