教育目標

(Course Objectives) 1. Students will develop language and reading skills leading to a solid foundation for their study of British, American, and other Western Literatures, languages, and cultural media in required and elective courses in the English Majors program. Students will read and analyze those authors and periods which figure prominently in many literature and culture courses in the FLLD. Students will also familiarize themselves with key literary and cultural concepts (the rights of the individual, the social contract, political philosophy, humanist writings, romantic fiction and poetry, women’s rights, confessional literature, romantic lyric poetry, social and political satire, etc.). This literature will be examined for the traces of influence wrought by Europe’s cultural indebtedness to the Renaissance, and the way it extends the logic of that world view into the literature of later periods. The course will promote students’ understanding of the Western literary tradition while contributing to their conceptual and linguistic enrichment. Students will give evidence of mastering these areas on quizzes, tests, and in written work. 2. Gain understanding of the process whereby different aspects of European literature from the Enlightenment and early European Romantic periods have become important influences on world civilization. Students will give evidence of mastering this knowledge on quizzes, tests, and in written work.
