Students will be able to: • identify major literary genres, and trace the emergence and development of literary forms during this period; • apply relevant critical and theoretical frameworks to evaluate the literature within historical, multicultural, and philosophical contexts; • demonstrate orally and in college-level writing an analytical understanding of the literary texts; and • demonstrate appropriate formatting and documentation.

課程概述

This course introduces students to American literature, from Native American literary traditions before Columbus up through the present day, and the historical concerns that mark particular literary epochs. What vision do American writers have of their country, and how do they express their own relationship to it? We will also consider these issues in a larger sense, so that students not only develop an understanding of American literary history but also how any particular country developes a vision of itself through its literature.

Participation
Participation constitutes an important aspect of your final grade for this class. Participation includes demonstrated effort in class discussions, writing assignments, and revision, as well as willingness to learn and application of skills.
Full participation in this course requires strict attention to class discussion. On days when we are discussing assigned readings, each student is required to have the relevant text in hand. Students who do not have the required text may be counted absent for the day without notice. The same holds true for workshop and small-group peer review days.
Please turn off all cell phones and other electronic devices prior to entering the classroom. A cell phone ring tone is an unnecessary distraction that disrupts the classroom; consequently, the participation grade of students who allow such distractions to occur frequently may be penalized. Under no circumstances should a student answer a cell phone in class, use text messaging during class, or otherwise allow an electronic device to distract him or her from the class discussion. Offending students may be counted absent for the day without notice.
