教育目標

The main objective of this course is to develop advanced academic oral skills through practice in a variety of genres. 1. Students will polish their oral skills through a variety of formal and semi-formal presentations, including dramatic readings and presentations, book presentations, etc. 2. Students will learn how to listen to public speaking critically, responsively and objectively. 3. Students will master presenting familiar topics in a smooth, understandable and organized way. 4. Students will work in pairs or small groups and be responsible for leading class discussions on literary texts. 5. Students will research and give individual presentations on relevant issues in the news. At several points during the semester students will be asked to talk individually with the teacher on a variety of topics. Students will individually choose a book written in Chinese (fiction or non-fiction), read the book, and present the book to the class. Students should also be prepared to answer questions by the classmates. Students will present personal presentations on their interests and on themselves. Working in pairs, students will have two or more turns at leading class discussions with their study questions. Students prepare study questions for part of a literary text and lead a discussion using these questions. Students will actively participate in discussions on literary texts, news events, and/or other topics introduced in class. Students will individually present a news report (i.e. students summarize a news report and prepare discussion questions) and lead a brief discussion about the issue presented. Students will work in pairs or groups to present a chapter or part of The Norton Reader and lead a brief discussion about the issue presented. Students will present their research papers to the class.
