教育目標

Students will develop a comprehensive and critically informed perspective on course themes, including power relations and social structure, the freedom of the individual vs. societal conformity, the formation of new social identities, the resistance to political domination, the rights of the individual before the law, changes in gender roles and relations, and the concept of voice in literary studies. The course will further explore these concepts in the investigation of the individual in relation to religion, to particular social structures and conditions such as the state of nature, the social contract, the notion of individualized subjectivity, revolution, political ideology, encounters with the cultural other, etc. Students will give evidence of mastering this knowledge on quizzes, tests, and in written work. Students will gain perspectives on European literature that will encourage an understanding of all human culture as a construct and thus foster critical thought regarding many aspects of the human experience such as, e.g., governmental systems; religion, myth, and ritual; gender roles; notions of social class and caste; race and ethnicity; etc.

課程概述

European Literature: 17th and 18th century is an elective for third- and fourth-year students. The course focuses on the 17th and 18th centuries in European Literature, including French Classicism, the early Romantic period, and the German Sturm und Drang Period. Students read relevant pieces of French, German, English Literature.
