教育目標

Western Philosophy means a specific tradition of philosophy that was started in ancient greek and took its course toward the rest of Europe and over the Atlantic ocean. Although it is connected to particular thinkers and their ideas, there are main problems to identify nearly all these philosophers were concerned with. For this reason, the course starts in discussing these problems. For that purpose we will use one of the best issue-centered Introductions to Philosophy, Thomas Nagels “What does it all mean?”. After that, the course will be more philosopher-centered and more specific. We try to cover the wide scope of Western Philosophy from the Pre-Socratic to Postanalytic Philosophy. Covering a wide scope means on the other hand that you cannot expect that we can gain a deep understanding in every particular philosophical work. Introductions have to be cursory. But we can gain a first overview over the most important efforts in and a familiarity with the most important works of Western Philosophy. This may be helpful for students for further, more detailed study of these philosophers. Furthermore, attendants will take a greater sophistication in their own deployment of abstract philosophical ideas. In this course the texts in the textbooks will be read and discussed. Every student is expected to attend regularly and to take active part, which is crucial for achieving the course´s goals. In every meeting, one or more students should present the topic according the textbook in a short presentation (15 min.)
