教育目標
In this course you will find no contemporary text about political theory, only text of importance of the western tradition. These texts raise questions about the very essence of liberty, equality, legitimacy and justice, and most of them have still lots to say to us today. These texts therefor will not be appraised in their historical context only, but also discussed for a better understanding of social and political problems we face today. The question these texts discussed are manifold and multifaceted: What makes a republic just (Platon)? Is man a political animal (Aristotle)? Is every means justified by just political ends (Machiavelli)? Is it legitimate to resist government (Hobbes)? Why men are not free and treated unequal (Rousseau)? What we have to understand of political liberty (Berlin)? Is war necessary (Kant)? Is state rational (Hegel)? Does a society need enemies (Schmitt)? What is justice in politics (Rawls)?
The first objective of the course is to help the attendants to gain knowledge about the most important texts of western political theory. Not all of these text could be read, so I had to make a selection, and certain arbitrariness in this selection was unavoidable. The second goal of the course is to help attendants getting aware of the complexity of political issues and being more reflective of how political concepts like freedom, justice and equality has to be used properly. Last, but not least: Knowing these texts will be helpful for the attending students for further study of political theory.
In this course the introduced texts will be read and discussed. Every student is expected to attend regularly and to take active part, which is crucial for achieving the course´s goals. In every meeting, one or more students should present the texts in a short presentation (15 min.)
