教育目標

1. Students will learn about the pattern of home-away-home in children’s literature. They will obtain a deeper understanding of this pattern and the meanings attributed to the different parts of the equation. The concept of home and the concept of away will be illuminated as settings, symbols, and structural motifs within children’s literature including discussion of the happy ending which is often seen as a necessary feature of literature for children. Students will demonstrate this knowledge and ability in a research paper, journal essays, presentations, classroom discussions, and other in-class work. 2. Students will read a variety of works demonstrating the home-away-home pattern. They will identify the different forms this pattern can take and consider the salient features of this aspect of children’s literature and also see how this pattern develops and changes over time and is used differently in various genres. They will demonstrate this knowledge and ability in a research paper, journal essays, presentations, classroom discussions, and other in-class work. 3. Students will read a number of secondary texts related to the pattern of home-away-home as well as secondary materials on authors and books under discussion. They will also look at general literary theory and criticism related to travel literature and children’s literature. They will demonstrate this knowledge and ability in a research paper, journal essays, presentations, classroom discussions and other in-class work. 4. Students will apply literary theory and criticism to one or more works by one or more authors of their choice. They will independently research these works and develop a well-argued research paper in relation to the topics and themes discussed in class. They will present their findings to the class at the end of the semester.

課程概述

Perry Nodelman and Mavis Reimer argue in The Pleasures of Children’s Literature (3rd edition, 197-202) that all children’s literature can be seen as following the pattern home-away-home. This narrative pattern suggests that there is a tension between the two poles and that ‘home’ and ‘away’ are constructed as binary opposites to each other. Home can both be seen as a safe and familiar place offering comfort and as a place of danger and pain bringing fear. Based on how home is constructed, away will be seen as a space that is unknown and therefore related to the uncanny creating anxiety or as a place for adventure and fun.
