教育目標
1 improve students’ communication skills in English through activities with engaging topics, themes, and ideas related to students and their interests
2 increase students’ knowledge of the English language
3 build students’ communicative and linguistic competence. Students will meet these goals by completing several meaningful tasks. These tasks will be performed in a supportive atmosphere that will facilitate English fluency as well as accuracy. In short, this class is designed to help students increase their ability to use the English language.
The course will be divided into two following sections:
Reading for Fun
In this course, students will explore a variety of young adult novels across different genres and styles (some books that will be sampled from: The Lightning Thief, The Fault in Our Stars, Captain Underpants, The Book Thief, etc.). Every class will involve reading an excerpt from a different novel, followed by group discussion and activities. Students will be required to participate in these discussions. A one-page paper will be submitted every other week; students may choose which excerpt they’d like to write about. Finally, there will be group presentations at the end of the semester as a final exam. The aim of this course is to encourage students to read outside of class and show the value of fun literature.
Gender & Sexuality in Pop Culture
What is gender? What is sexuality? We will learn about the history and relevance of concepts like gender, sexuality, feminism, (in)equality, intersectionality, and the roles that these concepts play not only in our own lives, but also in society and pop culture. Students will learn to analyze and question the messages about gender and sexuality that many forms of media and pop culture express. Some forms of media and culture we will cover in class include social media sites, clothing, the news, advertisements, TV shows/movies, music/music videos, and more.
