Attendance and Participation 25 The majority of this class will be discussion based. Your participation is crucial to an interesting and thought-provoking class. All students are expected to participate in class discussion. Attendance is expected and will be taken at every class. As the majority of quiz and test material will be based on in class discussions, you should know how to take detailed notes quickly in order to prepare for quizzes and tests. Failure to attend class on an exam or project day without providing a valid
Consumption Diary 20 Students will keep a “consumption diary” for the first half of the semester. The diary will be a notebook listing all purchases and the social/emotional context in which they are made. This diary will allow students to reflect upon patterns of their consumption and situate them within a local and global context. Students will give a short presentation reflecting upon their particular insights gained about their consumption habits.
Commodity Project and Presentation 20 Students will select a commodity to follow through its entire lifecycle. Students will design a poster showcasing what they have learned about the commodity they have chosen. A short written description of the project with references will accompany each poster. Finally, the student will give a short presentation on their findings.
Final Exam 20 The final exam will consist of multiple choice, short response and essay questions covering all material discussed in class and selected readings. A study guide will be provided.
Participant Observation/User Experience Exercises 15 On Weeks 5 and 14, students will be led by the instructor to the Tunghai Night Market and IKEA, respectively, to conduct participant observation and user experience exercises. Students will be expected to take notes on the behaviors and interactions of individuals at these sties and subsequently write a one page paper on what they observed along with any insights. The notes from that day’s observation and paper are due two weeks after the exercise, Weeks 7 and 16.

教育目標

*Introduce anthropology. Students will be introduced to basic anthropological concepts including culture and social change, to better understand trends in global consumerism and to provide students with a more holistic appreciation of human diversity. *Conduct cross-cultural analysis. Students will develop critical thinking skills by using cross-cultural analysis to understand consumer consumption in different cultures. This will allow students to develop a broader understanding of consumption in different cultures, and compare and contrast different means of production, consumption, and the meaning placed on commodities. *Understand the consumer and producer relationship. Students will be able to identify the role consumers have in the global economy and the power they exert. They will also be able to link consumer cultures to processes of globalization and localization, while highlighting the economic and political implications consumer cultures have on social class, regionalism and nationalism. Students will be able to understand how commodities produce values and meanings to consumers. *Understand the effects of a consumption society. Students will investigate and analyze whether current consumer cultures are sustainable. This analysis will examine the role consumption plays on our physical environment, including issues such as poverty, immigration, and morality.
