教育目標

Industrial ecology, the “study of the human-induced transformation of materials and energy from the perspectives of the environment and sustainability”, is an organizing concept that explores the interactions of our technological society with both natural and altered biophysical environments. Most analyses are contemporaneous, but historical and predictive studies are also part of the subject. The goals of the course: • To define and describe industrial ecology • To demonstrate the relationships among production, consumption, sustainability, and industrial ecology • To show how industrial ecology serves as a framework for the consideration of environmental and sustainability-related aspects of science and technology • To define and describe tools, applications, and implications of industrial ecology. CLASS CONTENT: 1. Before Midterm PART 1: Introduction to Industrial Ecology (Chapters 1, 2 and 3) PART 2: Framework Topics in Industrial Ecology (Chapters 4, 5, 6 and 7) 2. After Midterm PART 3: Implementation of Industrial Ecology (Chapters 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13 and 14) CLASS WORK 1. PROBLEM SETS: Several problem sets will be assigned during the course. They are to be completed individually as homework and handed a week later before the next class starts. 2. READINGS: The textbook is Industrial Ecology and Sustainable Engineering, by T.E. Graedel and B.R. Allenby. Almost all the other readings are available electronically from the university library, or they will be distributed in class. 3. CLASS WORKSHEETS: one per class, to follow along with the lecture (Student must be present in class during the complete 3 hours of class to be accepted). 4. CHAPTER TESTS (one per chapter, at the end of each chapter), MIDTERM (covers materials studied in Parts 1 and 2), FINAL TEST (covers materials studied in Part 3).
