On completion of the course, students should be able to
(1) enhance their English listening ability;
(2) enhance their English reading ability;
(3) enhance their overall English communicative ability; and
(4) express and communicate their ideas in English more confidently.
This course is designed for SENM students who want to enhance their communicative skills by hands-on experience. The instructor provides solid training in listening and speaking skills on certain focused themes. For example, 1) how deep-down can one go on the family tree. By asking students to learn more about their family members and origin, this project aims for self-understanding in depth so that one can better finds his own place in the world. 2) Making a Choice—which allows students in a small group to discuss the pros and cons in either choosing a job or a place to go on a trip. 3) A Film with a Specific Theme, which requires students to critique on the plot and scenes and ask them to counteract the ending by proposing an alternative solution. Besides vocabulary form the film, many concession phrases for argument will be taught to enhance debating skills. 4) Demonstration and persuasion: asking students in respective groups to sell an idea or a product. Through these four (types) of activities, it is hoped that students will become better English speakers to describe, demonstrate, and argue for a point.
Sophomore English for Non-English Majors (SENM) is a required course for the majority of second-year students. It is a one-year course (1-1 credits) taken during the second year regardless of whether a student has passed or failed FENM. Students are NOT arranged by a placement exam. Students will remain in the same course section, with the same teacher, for both fall and spring semesters.
This course is intended as a general two-skills (listening and reading) integrated English-as-a-foreign language (EFL) course, emphasizing English in general contexts. In particular, SENM focuses on reading and listening in academic contexts. English is the medium of instruction. The main goal in listening is to provide students with opportunities to hear different English accents and voices in practical real-life conversational situations. The main goal in reading is to enhance students’ reading comprehension through maximizing their opportunities to use basic reading skills such as skimming, scanning, reading for main ideas, inferring, and guessing vocabulary from context. As an extension of FENM, SENM focuses on reading and listening, but still makes use of the four language skill areas: listening, speaking, reading, and writing.
