This is a task-based course to provide basic linguistic and non-linguistic training on consecutive interpreting. Students are to learn basic interpreting skills and will acquire higher language proficiency, both in English and Chinese. The course covers the basic skills for consecutive interpreting, e.g. note-taking, memory, analysis and public speaking. Students will learn to convey the speaker’s language style, mood, and register while correctly expressing messages and ideas. At the same time, students learn to analyze the work of their own and their peers’ for improvement. Students will be expected to deepen their understanding of socio-economic conditions, cultural differences, historical developments, and current events related to the targeted language. They will also broaden their general knowledge and views in different topical areas, e.g. culture, politics, science and technology, finance and economy, and environment and energy.
