教育目標

The instructor will utilize lectures, discussions, readings and assignments to help students develop an understanding of the principles of economics and the applications to the issues concerning the environment and policies. Students are encouraged and directed to think and engage into the real-world problems as they relate to the environment around us, through discussion sessions and problem solving activities. The course objectives include: 1. Understanding basic economic theories and models, and thinking like an economist 2. Applying economic concepts to analyze environmental issues 3. Studying the approaches to environmental quality management and the design of environmental policy 4. Examining global issues concerning economic development, health and the environment.

課程概述

This course applies the principles of economics to the study of how and why individuals and organizations make decisions relating to the environment in our economy, and to the study of policy making, which can serve as an important part of solutions to the emerging environmental issues. It focuses not only on how and why people make economic decisions that have consequences for the natural environment, but also on how economic institutions and policies can be compiled with market/incentive-based mechanisms to bring these environmental impacts more into balance with human desires and the needs of the ecosystem. Particular issues include market failure, externality, common goods and public goods, valuation of non-market goods, environmental regulations, pollution and health, asymmetric information and moral hazard, policies and actions in global environmental issues.
