教育目標

What is the “big picture” in environmental science? How to know and effectively communicate it in Environmental Science and sustainability: Systems and Solutions. Whether the view the subject through a scientific, social, political, or historical lens, they will find the concrete foundations that work in both environmental science and environmental studies using a virtual application: the ECO game. A systems approach is the connective fabric that makes sense of the wealth of topics and data, which demonstrates how aspects of the natural environment interconnect with each other and with human society. A section on Resource Use and Management introduces the concept of sustainability, and another on Dealing with Environmental Degradation discusses threats to the environment and mitigation strategies. The ECO game, available online will introduce students to the Social Solutions to Environmental Concerns, will allow discussions of the complex issues impacting the environment and the scientific, technologic, and human behavioral ways to address them. Throughout the game and text the students will find the hard data necessary for a scientific study of the environment and the measured analysis ideal for our time.

課程概述

This course is general in nature and will introduce students to the basic principles of ecology and sustainability as they apply to the analysis of environmental systems on a global scale. The integrated nature of oceans, terrestrial and atmospheric systems, effects of human footprint, pollution creation, climate change, rates of resource harvest and sustainable food, energy and materials are some of the topics that will be covered. This course will better equip students for making informed decisions and taking economically feasible actions now that are in the interests of protecting the future of the planet we call home.
