English through American Television Dialogue 美劇對話學英文 Can you improve English by studying Rick and Morty? The Big Bang Theory? Black Mirror? Brooklyn Nine-Nine? This exciting and entertaining course is designed to promote students’ spoken fluency, build confidence and develop practical language knowledge through the study of authentic contemporary texts. In this course, students will study and discuss English dialogue from a variety of popular American television shows. Students will be introduced to a range of script dialogues curated according to genre, topic, theme, perspective, culture, popularity as well as student interest. English through American Television Dialogue will also familiarize students with natural English as it is spoken in everyday social contexts. Students will develop critical inference skills as they enhance their understanding of language use, especially within the American cultural landscape. 透過研讀美國當今流行電視劇對白，學生在有趣生動的課堂活動中，學習不同文化及社會語境中的日常生活英語溝通技巧、提昇英語流利度及信心、並訓練批判性思考能力。 Course Objectives: On completion of the course, students should be able to 1) use effectively the vocabulary and expressions acquired in the course to address daily-life topics; 2) use spontaneously the conversation strategies acquired in the course to initiate, sustain, and end communication; 3) communicate with others effectively in various daily-life situations; and 4) express themselves in English more confidently.

課程概述

「大二英文」是一個以學習者為中心的模組化課程。針對學生個人學習興趣及相關系所之專業需求，開設四大模組課程，分別為「職涯與專業」、「日常溝通」、「多元文化」以及「自我表達技巧」。四大模組分別由具有共同核心目標但涵蓋不同主題之課程所建構而成。所有的課程均以學期為單位，學生可以根據個別興趣及需求，於上、下學期選擇兩門不同的模組課程。本課程將以25人小班制進行互動式教學，結合討論、展演及實作等各類學習活動，讓學生能在更多元、自主的學習語境中，具體強化其英語文溝通能力。 本課程屬於「日常溝通」模組，強調英語學習與真實生活的連結，透過各種對話範例與練習讓學生將所學運用於日常生活中。除了日常生活詞彙外，常用口語和慣用語也是本模組所要涵蓋的核心內容。 The SENM program is a student-centered module-based program which offers students choices and small, interactive classes. The program encourages students to tailor their English learning to their specific needs and interests by offering four semester-based modules: Career and Profession, Daily Communication, Multiculturalism, and Self-Expression Skills. Additionally, within each of the four modules, there are different themes, or topics, around which each course‘s curriculum is built. Each SENM student can choose two different module courses in one academic year according to their needs and interests. The program’s small class size (no more than 25 students) means that a variety of class activities such as discussions, role plays, and presentations are an integral part of the program. This specific course belongs to the Daily Communication Module. This module emphasizes real-life English for effective communication. It provides conversation models and practices for a variety of common scenarios in everyday life. Apart from daily-life vocabulary, frequently-used colloquial and idiomatic expressions are the two major language components covered.
