Introduction to Film is an elective for third- and fourth-year students. This course introduces the basic fundamentals of film study. This includes the historical background from Silent Film to the current advances of the medium. Time permitting, the course will cover both narrative, documentary and avante garde film as well as four major popular genres from diverse cultures. Students will be introduced to basic narrative and film aesthetic theories.

Introduction to Film is an elective course that aims to introduce students to the basic techniques and language of cinema, including mise-en-scene, cinematography, editing, and sound. Students will learn about overall film structure and how film narrative is conveyed. Furthermore, students will be taught how to identify and comment on the specifics of film style and, in addition, will also understand how to classify films according to genre. Finally, students will learn about film criticism, the key movements in cinema history, and how to write a critical analysis of film. By the end of the course students should be able to: • Understand film language and use the correct taught terminology when commenting and identifying various aspects of a film. • Have a basic working knowledge of film history and its major movements. • Be able to write a critical analysis of film • Understand how film can be seen as an art form.
