課程概述

Students will read and discuss two popular modern American novels:Because of Winn-Dixie,which tells the story of how a stray dog helps a young girl and her father find the courage to face their losses and deal with their new life in a small town,and Number the Stars,a historical novel in which a young girl is asked to go on a dangerous mission to save her best friend s life during the Nazi occupation of Denmark in 1943.Discussions will deal with social issues that are related to student life,as well as general life,in our modern world.Discussions will take place in a relaxed and comfortable environment which is student-friendly.During class discussions,there will be no wrong answers,just varied opinions.The exams are the acting component of the course.For the two exams,students will form small groups and will create alternate endings to each of the two books.Students will perform their short plays in which they portray the characters in the books and continue the story lines beyond the actual endings of the books.For the midterm exam, the plays based on the first book,Because of Winn-Dixie,will be performedlive in front of the class in a theater setting.The final exam will be a showing of the student plays based on the second book, Number the Stars.For the final exam,students will perform and record their plays on DVD s for class viewing.
