課程概述
The literature of social protest is a broad and deep category that runs across multiple genres and includes various rhetorical modes and cultural and historical forms. Indeed, one might well claim that protest literature is at least as old as the Bible, given that one of its more expressive examples, the jeremiad, takes its name from the biblical prophet, Jeremiah. In more recent times, we have certainly witnessed a global firestorm of social and political protest, aimed at governments, banks, foreign policies, cultural customs, etc. This course will examine a broad overview of protest writings from various historical periods and different cultures, the better to understand how literature has served as a sounding board for social change and as a critical examination of a culture’s beliefs, practices and values.
