【Title: English for Self-Guided Tourists】
This course is designed for the students who plan to take self-guided trips in places where English is used as an official language or a lingua franca. To enhance students' ability to communicate effectively and confidently in English during every international trip, teaching materials that accommodate most students’ current English abilities and address comprehensive travel scenarios are selected. Skill-enhanced class activities and diverse evaluative measures are also incorporated into this course to attain those objectives. In addition to language proficiency, this course aims to nurture the students' intercultural competences so that they can behave in tune with local people in diverse situations while traveling overseas.
The SENM program, an extension program of the FENM program, is a student-centered course focusing on students′ learning needs and interests. The course design features a small-class (no more than 25 students) learning and four modules. These four modules are: Multiculturalism, Presentation and Public Speaking, Career and Profession, and Daily Communication. All modular courses are semester-based; so each SENM student can choose two different modules according to their individual learning needs in one academic year. Within each module, there are different sub-themes, or topics, around which the course curriculum is built. Various class activities such as discussions, exhibitions, competitions, and presentations are incorporated to strengthen students′ English competence.
This specific course belongs to the Module of Daily Communication. This module emphasizes real-life English for effective communication. It provides conversation models and practices for a variety of common scenarios in everyday life. Apart from daily-life vocabulary, frequently-used colloquial and idiomatic expressions are the two major language components covered.
On completion of the course, students should be able to
1) use effectively the vocabulary and expressions acquired in the course to address daily-life topics;
2) use spontaneously the conversation strategies acquired in the course to initiate, sustain, and end communication;
3) communicate with others effectively in various daily-life situations; and
4) express themselves in English more confidently.
