教育目標

The student will have an understanding of the different approaches to syntax and the essential concepts of English syntax under the framework of generative grammar. More importantly, the student will learn the methods of argumentation in generative syntactic analysis. It is also hoped that the student will be able to apply the knowledge gained from this course to teaching.

課程概述

This course offers a concise introduction to English syntax under the generative framework in the structuralist tradition. In particular, we will focus on the Principles and Parameters framework of syntax and cover its essential concepts and methods of argumentation. We will also discuss how the syntactic analyses can be applied to ESL teaching. It will be helpful if the student has taken a prior course on the Introduction to Linguistics.
