教育目標
The elective will take an historical approach, beginning with African American folktales, followed by slavery narratives, African American reconstruction authors, writers of the Harlem Renaissance, the realist, naturalist and modernist African American movements in fiction, and finally postmodern African American writers.
For each week of the first half of the semester students will read a short story or section from a novel and discuss it in class. Along with the class discussions, groups of students will be assigned presentations on parts of African American history or important African American figures which relate to the fiction being discussed that week.
The second half of the semester will be dedicated to a single African American novel, with groups of students providing questions and leading the discussion on parts of the novel with the class.
