教育目標

This is a graduate seminar, which focuses on the relationship between the economy, development, and political institutions. The economy plays an important role in human's daily life and politics. This course has four main topics: basic concepts of political economy, political development, political institutions and regime change, and political behavior. In the end of the semester, students are expected to understand the basic concepts of political economy, institutions, and the debates in the literature. This course will be helpful for students to develop critical thinking ability and the ability to do research independently. All students are expected to be pro-active in class. Your participation is the major contribution to this class. Each student will serve twice as discussion leader for the class. The discussion leader should read the material particularly closely and develop a series of questions to facilitate discussion. A major research design paper will be required of all students. This paper will involve original empirical research on a topic of each student's choosing that addresses a theoretically-grounded research question of interest to political scientists. Each student should begin to consider potential research topics as soon as possible, and should consult with the instructor about potential topics and relevant literature. In the end of the semester, each student must present their own seminar research. More information will be provided separately.
