Hume 在 1739-40 匿名出版的鉅著 A Treatise of Human Nature 在當時並沒受到好評, 使得Hume大感失望。經反省後, Hume 將 Treatise 加以改寫, 他改變了論文的形式, 使其更清晰, 保留了裡面的主要論點並加以精進。在這些重新改寫本裡, 有兩本重要的作品: An Enquiry concerning Human Understanding (1748), 稱為 the first Enquiry, 和 An Enquiry concerning the Principles of Morals (1751), 亦即 the second Enquiry。這門課將閱讀 the second Enquiry, 這也是 Hume 自認為是他的著作中最好的一本。
