教育目標

By the end of the course, students should have achieved the following objectives: 1) To study and fully explore David Hare’s major works. 2) To contextualize Hare’s life, career, and dramatic work. 3) To locate Hare’s significance as a contemporary playwright in the British cultural landscap

課程概述

English playwright David Hare (1947~) has been greatly admired in the English-speaking world. An idealist but often disillusioned at the same time, Hare poses self-contradictory views in his plays regarding now and past, honour and humiliation, utopia and dystopia, passion and indifference, as well as love and hatred. His sheer honesty in portraying human struggles over these elusive concepts is best embodied in his personal search for a clearer self, political, and cultural identity for himself, and also for the British, with his multiple roles as a playwright, a director, an actor, and an explorer of political activism. This course aims to investigate Hare’s artistic, political, and cultural views through the exploration of his stage and screen plays. Texts of the selected plays will be studied and cross-examined to illustrate parallel motifs, symbols, and themes, as well as to define Hare’s writing styles and purposes.
