教育目標

Literature and Film is an elective course that aims to introduce students to the core concepts and relationships between literature and film. Students will learn about the nature of literature to film translations, the differences between the language of literature and film and how one would go about translating short stories, novels, poetry, and plays into film. Furthermore, students will follow two case studies (Jane Austen’s Emma and Shakespeare’s Macbeth) by reading the novel/play and watching and discussing the many translations of the texts into films. At the end of the semester student groups will adapt a short story, play or section of a novel into a short film to present to the class.

課程概述

Film and Literature is an elective for third- and fourth-year students. This course aims to help the students contextualize the relationships between cinematic language and literary writing. By studying the texts of Sense and Sensibility, The English Patient, and The Hours, the students get to explore the themes and imageries of the novels first, and then venture to see how three internationally renowned movie directors visualize the stories. This is a course that enriches the students’ literary and visual experiences. Towards the end of the semester, the students will be encouraged to write a short story and make a short film out of it.
