教育目標

Why am I teaching this course? Because I’m want learn more about the subject myself. The best learning is done together. I will bring to the course my experience and expertise as a musician, and you will bring to the course your own knowledge, curiosity, taste, and willingness to engage the material and be open to new listening experiences. My teaching philosophy is rooted in the humanities, and I use a “liberal arts” approach: extensive classroom discussion, short informal in-class responses to a question or writing prompt, and longer formal essays that respond to a writing prompt -- all with the ultimate goal of learning how to make 1) a claim, 2) construct an argument, and 3) use evidence to support your claim. Real thinking is the active process of asking questions. So let’s begin with a few: How do composers and songwriters come up with original material? Is there such a thing as a totally original piece of music? 1.Music is central to our social lives and our cultural identities. How do we use music to construct and maintain our identities? 2.Are musical identities constructed differently in the East and West? 3.How have the soundscapes that surrounded us as we grow to adulthood contributed to our musical tastes and preferences?
