[Hi, I am from Taiwan. And you?] As we have more and more opportunities to interact with people from different cultures, how to maintain an effective communication through understanding and respecting cultural similarities and differences is a practical topic. Drawing on their own culture as a starting point, students in this class will explore intercultural topics in travel, pop culture, hobby, food and drink, and topics based on students’ own interests and needs. They will participate in various activities of intercultural comparisons and discussions, conversations with invited speakers from different cultures, relevant on-campus events, and creative projects for designing intercultural interactions. This class aims to develop student’s cultural and language confidence and readiness in interacting with people from other cultures in English. [嗨, 我來自台灣. 你呢?] 隨著越來越多與不同文化背景的人交流的機會,如何通過理解和尊重文化異同來保持有效的溝通是一個實際的主題。以學生自身的文化為出發點,學生們將在這門課裡探索與旅行、流行文化、愛好、飲食和其他有興趣或需求的跨文化主題。 他們將參與各種跨文化比較和討論活動、與來自不同文化的受邀演講者對話、相關校園活動、以及設計跨文化互動的創意專案。本課程旨在培養學生的文化和語言信心及充足準備來用英語與其他文化背景的人交流。

課程概述

「大二英文」是一個以學習者為中心的模組化課程。針對學生個人學習興趣及相關系所之專業需求,開設四大模組課程,分別為「職涯與專業」、「日常溝通」、「多元文化」以及「自我表達技巧」。四大模組分別由具有共同核心目標但涵蓋不同主題之課程所建構而成。所有的課程均以學期為單位,學生根據個別興趣及需求,必須於上、下學期選擇兩門不同的模組課程。本課程將以25人小班制進行互動式教學,結合討論、展演及實作等各類學習活動,讓學生能在更多元、自主的學習語境中,具體強化其英語文溝通能力。 本課程屬於「多元文化」模組,因應全球化時代的來臨與多元語境融入英語學習的新趨勢,引導學生在學習英文的過程中,體驗不同文化現象,培養多元視角之世界觀,進而完備其成為世界公民之基本素養。 The SENM program is a student-centered module-based program which offers students choices and small, interactive classes. The program encourages students to tailor their English learning to their specific needs and interests by offering four semester-based modules: Career and Profession, Daily Communication, Multiculturalism, and Self-Expression Skills. Additionally, within each of the four modules, there are different themes, or topics, around which each course‘s curriculum is built. Each SENM student must choose two different module courses in one academic year according to their interests and needs. The program’s small class size (no more than 25 students) means that a variety of class activities such as discussions, role plays, and presentations are an integral part of the program. This specific course belongs to the Multiculturalism Module. This module provides students with opportunities to experience different cultural phenomena. It helps students to cultivate multiple global perspectives and to prepare them to be global citizens. Course Objectives: On completion of the course, students should be able to 1) provide real-life examples of social and cultural diversity; 2) demonstrate their multicultural awareness and appreciation; 3) use idiomatic expressions acquired in the course; and 4) express their opinions on diversity issues more confidently.
