本課程希望讓同學們對自己的主修樂器，在不同時期應具備的風格有更深刻的理解，包含獨奏曲、室內樂到樂團片段的演奏與詮釋。從認識不同時期的樂器特色，到如何影響當代音樂風格及演奏技法，廣泛了解代表性作曲家與重要作品風格，至針對個別樂曲深度研討分析與演繹，互相觀摩演奏與課堂討論也將提升研究生的獨立思考與批判能力。 除了對巴洛克、古典、浪漫時期到二十一世紀的不同的音樂風格演繹與探討，本堂課希望由多面向的切入點，開拓同學的視野並且幫助同學建立音樂家需要的基本概念：如何有效率的練習，如何克服技巧障礙，如何傳達情感與表現力，如何克服上台緊張，如何準備樂團考試等，如何呈現樂曲風格並找出個人特色，如何與其他音樂家合作等。
