教育目標

何謂建築史？從最表面的層次來看，歷史就是從過去、現在、未來中，找到自己安身立命的看法。但我們再深思，在「詩歌比歷史還真實」、「裝飾與罪惡」等各種的說法之下，歷史研究在二十世紀受到前所未有的危機，建築史也成為風格、材料與形式的礦石堆積場，難以成為一種觀看、思索並且製造世界的方法。直到1970年代「由下而上」的歷史學興起之後，以往被視為「次文化」的領域，包括社會史、物質與文化史的影響之下，建築學院中的歷史視野逐漸打開，建築史也重新回到當代人的關切之下。從史前、古典、中世紀、文藝復興到現代，是傳統藝術史的研究範疇。所謂的「西方」建築史似乎自成體系，囿於民族國家和觀光行銷的視角，我們多半習慣從疆域邊界來思考風格，然而在後殖民與行星視角之下，世界之間的相互依存與交織，在物質文明中也顯現出確鑿的證據。 建築研究同時是文化史的，包括繪畫、雕塑、文學與哲學等關於製造與創作的技藝，同時也是社會史的，包括習俗、環境、都市等周邊條件。前者強調典例（precedents）與創新的重要性，後者強調設計行為作為世界網絡的一部分。本課程以時間的因果關係為縱軸，空間地理的連結關係為橫軸，交織出人類歷史中的建築行為。藉由這樣的學習過程，同學將逐漸消化、吸收並理解建築作為一種人造物件，以及歷史過程中的形塑力量：包括社會、政治、地理與環境等因子，進而在歷史的光譜中找到自己的位置。一旦我們開啟了歷史意識（historical consciousness），從傳統到歷史的態度轉移也幫助建築師從當下、當代的困境中解放出來，進而深刻體會到根植過去的開放性。 指定閱讀(Required reading): Marvin Trachtenberg and Isabelle Hayman, Architecture: Prehistory to Postmodern, 2nd ed.
